PROFESSIONAL BIOSKETCH

Dr. Gurumurthy Hiremath is a pediatric cardiologist and nationally recognized leader in congenital interventional cardiology, integrating complex clinical care, innovation, research, education, and physician leadership. He completed a pediatric cardiology fellowship and an additional year of advanced pediatric interventional cardiology training at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital. He is currently an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Minnesota and serves as Interim Division Director of Pediatric Cardiology, Co-Director of the Pediatric Heart Center, Director of the Pediatric Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories, and Director of the Pediatric Cardiopulmonary Exercise Laboratory.

Dr. Hiremath's clinical expertise encompasses the full spectrum of congenital cardiac catheterization, with particular interests in pulmonary artery rehabilitation and stenting, transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement, device closure of intracardiac defects, complex interventions in adults with congenital heart disease, and hybrid procedures performed in collaboration with congenital cardiac surgeons. His clinical leadership has included development of quality-improvement initiatives in radiation safety, procedural efficiency, catheterization outcomes, and multidisciplinary care.

His research program is focused on understanding the physiologic consequences of transcatheter interventions and translating physiologic insights into improved patient care. His work has examined the impact of pulmonary artery interventions on hemodynamics and exercise capacity and has advanced the clinical application of intracardiac pressure-volume loop assessment in congenital heart disease. He is also actively engaged in translational cardiovascular innovation, including development of growing transcatheter pulmonary valve technologies and bioengineered cardiovascular tissues. His current research includes a Children’s Heart Foundation-funded project on a growing transcatheter pulmonary stent valve and clinical investigation of novel structural heart devices.

Dr. Hiremath has authored more than 60 peer-reviewed publications and has contributed to national multicenter registries, clinical trials, consensus and policy statements, and collaborative translational research. His scholarship includes work in congenital interventional cardiology, hemodynamics, pulmonary artery disease, radiation exposure, transcatheter valve therapy, and long-term outcomes of congenital heart disease. He has served as a principal or site investigator and collaborator on NIH-, foundation-, and industry-supported research and has developed longstanding collaborations with engineers, scientists, surgeons, and medical-device companies.

Nationally, Dr. Hiremath is deeply engaged in advancing pediatric interventional cardiology. He serves as Chair of the Pediatric Interventional Cardiology Society (PICS) Education Committee, a member of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography & Interventions (SCAI) Congenital Heart Disease Council, and an Associate Editor and Section Editor for the Journal of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography & Interventions. He is also a founding editor of the PICS 'Tips and Tricks' educational platform and has held leadership roles in the Pediatric Interventional Cardiology Early Career Society, including Research Vice President from 2018–2020.

As a physician leader and educator, Dr. Hiremath has pursued formal training in healthcare executive leadership and change management and has served extensively as a mentor to fellows, junior faculty, advanced practice providers, and trainees in medical-device innovation. His leadership philosophy emphasizes clinical excellence, team development, innovation, collaboration, and building systems that support both outstanding patient care and a strong academic mission. He is the inaugural holder of the Forrest H. Adams Chair in Pediatric Cardiovascular Health and has received multiple honors for clinical excellence, innovation, leadership, and academic contribution.
